Physician Practice Management
Within any physician practice, management skills are vital to ensure the success of the practice and to ensure that there is a continuum of patients. Management is not a position suited to everyone and many a time one requires further training and expertise in order to assume such a role. So what is management responsible for? Primarily, ensuring patient well being and care is the job required of the physician himself or herself and the assistant nurses etc. Management is there to ensure that the assistants are doing their work properly and to ensure that the service of the practice is optimal. Management must also have efficient knowledge surrounding the administration of the practice. Administrative duties include, knowing how healthcare insurance works, knowing how long patient records need to be retained and having sufficient knowledge surrounding the ethics of the practice.
One of the most important ethics required for physician practice management is the concept of confidentiality. Patients need to be rest assured that their medical information is kept private at all times and that only with their permission is information allowed to be released for varying purposes, (this may for example occur when a psychologist requires medical records from a physician regarding the care and treatment that his or her client has undergone). For underage patients, a consent form needs to be signed by either the parent or the guardian, which gives the physician permission to perform medical procedures on the patient. Within a physician’s practice, management duties are therefore mainly based on responsibility and thorough knowledge and one must to be a dedicated and ambitious person in order to assume a role as such.
Within any workplace, primarily those persons who can assume responsibility fulfill management positions. They are role models for the staff they are in charge of and should work in accordance with the vision and ethics of the community they serve. Physician practice management skills can be enhanced by attending workshops and seminars. Knowledge is endless and the more skills that one is able to posses, the more likely one is of achieving success within a certain line of duty. Management positions require people who are willing to work hard and who are willing to assume responsibility upon them. An effective leader is one who is able to think critically, one who is able to think creatively and one who is able to create a flourishing working environment. Overseeing duties of staff may seem to be a complicated and often overwhelming position but when one considers the potential outcome and how the practice has succeeded because of your hard work, it is definitely worth it. Physician practice management positions are therefore extremely rewarding and with hard work and dedication, anyone is able to assume this satisfying role .
