Practice Management

Within a dental practice, management should be efficient enough to allow a continuous flow of satisfied patients to and from the dental offices. A management position is one of the most stressful and time-consuming positions one can ever undertake, the main reason being that everything that occurs within the workplace always falls back onto management. Hundreds of people visit dental practices each year, whether it is for the annual check-up or for a procedure such as dental veneers. Having somebody working on your teeth can already be a nerve wrecking experience; therefore, with the proper staff and highly skilled dentists, this annual visit should be welcomed and anticipated rather than anxiously feared.

One of the most important task’s in dental practice management is teamwork. Staff members must be able to work effectively with each other and not allow differences within the workplace to affect their overall performance. Management teams should therefore emphasize and incorporate team building into every workday, thereby allowing staff members to learn how to work with other people regardless of their differences. Secondly, respect within the workplace is of utmost importance, this includes respects toward everyone who is working within the same environment and respect toward all patients. Patient care will automatically increase and improve when the staff members are able to work together as a team and assist each other in all possible manners. Within any dental practice, management resources should include the ability to encourage and incorporate open communication. Staff members should not sit with sadness or anger bottled up within them, these feelings would then probably be let out on an innocent patient seeking care, instead, open communication allows staff to discuss those issues that they are concerned about and allows them to deal with it in a mature manner.

To ensure success of any dental practice, patients require the best possible care. This means that they feel welcomed from the moment they enter the doors up until the moment they leave, and even beyond this. Practice management teams should ensure that patients are receiving the care they deserve and that all staff members are completing their duties promptly and optimally. As with any position requiring long hours, dental practice staff may suffer from fatigue and burnout. Overworking should therefore not be an aim of any dental practice management team, in fact, ensuring that there are enough staff members to work shifts will ensure that everybody is getting the rest they deserve, after all, effective work entails enough body rejuvenating time. Practice management is not an easy task; it places a lot of demand on a person’s life. It is therefore essential that when deciding to undertake a position as such that one is motivated and driven toward the position and above all, that one is willing to take the good with the bad and work hard at achieving the best possible success.
